Join us if you want to know the interesting stories between design and materials of bamboo, paper and wood. Mr. Zhang Lei, founder of Pinwu Design Studio from Hangzhou and Mr. Freeman Lau, renowned Hong Kong designer will share their experiences in material world. The sharing will be moderated by curator Amy Chow.

About Guest Speaker - Freeman Lau

Director of Board of Directors, Hong Kong Design Centre

Born in 1958, Freeman Lau is a renowned artist and designer in Hong Kong.  Freeman is currently the Founder of KL&K Creative Strategics, the Vice Chairman for the Design Alliance Asia (tDA Asia), a Director of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), and the Secretary General of Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations (FHKDA).  These years, he is devoted in promoting the design industry. 

Since 1984, Freeman has won over 300 design awards and his design profession is developed in several fields.  His most recent design achievements include “The Best Asian Designer” at the 2014 Asian Designers’ Invitational Exhibition in Korea endorsed by ico-D (2014), “Grand Award of DFA Design for Asia Awards” (2015),  “iF Design Award” (2016) and the “Hong Kong Culture Creativity Industries Award” by the Asia Pacific Creativity Industries Association (2017).

Rong Design Library has finished its research on representative handicraft materials in 31 provinces (municipalities) in China. Its core mission is to deconstruct the traditional Chinese handicrafts into materials and processes, provide the results of materials research to the world's designers and artists, and encourage them to apply the thinking of deconstruction to be in cooperation with traditional handicraft workshops.

About Curator - Amy Chow

Amy Chow is an interdisciplinary design expert and connoisseur with achievements in multiple roles. She has spearheaded numerous critically acclaimed design exhibitions to the local and international audience, including Creative Hong Kong: Project 9707 (2007) which was seen in Vancouver, Milan, London, New York and Seoul, the six-month-long Creative Ecologies of Hong Kong: Business Living Creativity (2010) at the Shanghai World Expo and Confluence 20+ (2017), a monumental roving exhibition series which has travelled to Milan, Hong Kong, Seoul and Chicago.

About the Exhibition - Material Modernity: Incredible Bamboo, Paper & Wood

"MATERIAL MODERNITY: INCREDIBLE BAMBOO, PAPER & WOOD" is the debut exhibition of Design Spectrum to be grandly opened on 19 Jul at 7 Mallory Street. The exhibition leads visitors to look at the visual culture and language of Asian design through material innovation. The ninety projects on display in this exhibition span the continents and the exhibition provided a great opportunity for design lovers to observe that many designers nevertheless cling to their ethnic identities and cultural distinctiveness. This exhibition will also feature various of events including workshops and designer sharing! Don’t miss the chance and join us to get the hands-on experience!

About Design Spectrum

Design Spectrum is a new initiative by Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) to foster a good design culture in the community. Located in a revitalised cluster of Grade 2 historic buildings at 7 Mallory Street, Wan Chai, Design Spectrum features year-round exhibitions, exchanges, design appreciation and other promotion programmes to cultivate a creative atmosphere, while nurturing local creative capital.
