Smile gatherings are organic, unconventional and spectacular. This type of spatial strategy is an integral part of the overall experience because it sets the initial vibe which the party goers will immerse themselves in.

Spring is upon us and it’s time for another tale in a series of exclusive and intimate rooftop parties set upon two unique spaces at Ovolo Southside’s rooftop, Aberdeen Southside cultural district.

Smile’s hedonistic lifestyle party brings together cultures, food, music, the arts and friends for unpretentious nights of fun bringing House, Techno and Acid House from past, present and future.

Live Performance by

Casey Anderson (monoboss)

Musically we push the realms once again with 2 first to smile musical genius’s Christian and performance live and fresh from Sonar HK - Casey Anderson (Monoboss).

Christian developed a love for electronic music since the early 90’s heavily influenced by the music coming out of Chicago, Detroit and the UK. These sounds gave him a new direction and continues to inspire his development.

Christian spent the last two decades educating his ears and defining his style of DJing playing across the globe. After years of experience of working with all the big guns such as Sven Vath, John Digweed, Carl Cox alongside his heavy involvement in the HK underground scene, Christian's personal style and approach to his music is sublime and smooth that drops elements of mushy surprises. The best way to get know him is come and listen to his techniques and music collection from his own world on the decks.

Joining Christian, fresh from the all new HK Sonar, Casey Anderson bring this rolling acid house live and direct to spring smile. Casey aka Monoboss produces 100% improvised live techno using a modular synthesizer he built himself. The idea is to make dancefloor-ready techno that's a 50/50 collaboration between man and machine.

When the synthesiser is switched on, it plays completely atonal melodies in irregular patterns. By turning some knobs and flipping some switches, these random notes gets tamed into more rhythmic loops until a groove appears. Monoboss responds to it by playing other instruments like keyboard and drums, building up a new track on the fly. The process is like having a jam session with your friend, but your friend is a robot you've built!

When each track's moment has passed, the knobs and switches are turned once again, and a brand new groove appears from the synthesizer. That means every performance evolves as a unique and impermanent improvisation session which can never be saved or recalled. The best part is, you can dance to it!

Monoboss is long-time Hong Kong DJ Casey Anderson. Originally from a small town in Florida, USA, Casey grew up on noisy guitars until he attended his first rave on a beach in Hong Kong in 2006, where he immediately swore he would become a DJ and producer. He’s since spent a decade perched above dancefloors, sharpening his laser-focused intuition on how to manipulate dancers to have the best experience possible listening to the weirdest house and cosmic techno acceptable. In 2016 he turned his focus from wild parties to books about electronic circuits, building his own eurorack format modular synthesiser to replace the turntables as his tool of choice for hypnotizing dancers.

SPONSOR

Smile is pleased to announce that HK brewed beer company Gweilo joins the party offering you to sample their great tasting and fun beers with a free beer upon arrival.

The Gweilo journey started by stripping the brewing process back to basics, spending months working closely with an internationally acclaimed craft brewer to create our own unique recipes. The team at Gweilo embarked on a number of hop tea and malt sensory sessions, sampling a range of hops and malts from across Europe, North America and the South Pacific in order to source the perfect ingredients. We benchmarked over 150 beers. The journey required dedication and stamina; it was tough!

Gweilo beers are session style ales ranging between 4% and 6%. They can be enjoyed all day and all night long. However, please drink responsibly because we wouldn't want you being arrested for stealing one of Hong Kong’s notoriously funny street signs...
