Ken Miki, Founder, Ken Milki & Associates-JP

Ken Miki wants to convey to people learning design for the first time just how fascinating design is. Using an apple - a       fruit universally familiar to everybody everywhere – he wants people to experience both the fun and profundity of design. His project is "a new form of class," one in which the participants design the class itself. Design a way of thinking. Design how to make something. Design how to convey something. Design a way of learning. Understanding → observation → imagination → decomposition → editing → visualisation. With this entire process one searches for realisation. “Design isn't merely making something visible. It makes something come into view. Realising realisation. That's the kind of design I'm looking for.”

10:30          East Meets West, Last or Cast?!

Moderated by Douglas Young, CEO & Co-Founder, G.O.D.-CN

With the history of Chinese heritage and British colonisation, Hong Kong has been the melting pot of Chinese and Western characteristics for a very long time. Taking advantage of this unique fusion of East meeting West, the Hong Kong design scene has thrived on the widespread Oriental imaginaries since the 80s. Facing today’s challenges of globalisation and cultural homogenisation, it is important for us to review the contemporary relevance of the trend for social development.

Technology has indeed always been a mechanical system derived from utterly human reasons. Advancements in technology are life-driven: as modes of living evolves, systems and apps also update. Men are born with the natural skills to create and make things, but to exchange for the speed and convenience nowadays, the precious human touch and feel of traditional craftsmanship are dying. Let us explore whether we are losing or gaining more over technological developments, which bring us creative interactive experiences as well as communication problems.

“Innovation is the successful exploration of new ideas.” – Innovation Unit, UK Department of Trade and Industry, 2004

Like everything else, “design” is in and of itself an arbitrary concept. It is at once a discipline; a process; a plan and a product-service-system. Design by nature is always changing as ways of living alter, it inevitably reconstructs itself and takes on new approaches again and again until it works. “[D]esign does not involve innovation. [Industries] that do not contain elements of innovation are design.” In response to the recent controversies over the link between design and innovation, we will re-examine their relationship and explore whether innovation can be completely taken out of the design equation.

Companies operating in Growth Markets face three main pressures: Rapid Growth, Limited Resources and Infrastructure Voids. Steelcase researchers recently completed an in-depth study in India and China to better understand these unique challenges. New insights around the work being done will allow organisations to create work environments for maximum resilience. As a result the workplace can be designed as a catalyst for change and will help them better compete.

14:00          Out of Town, Into the World 設計在異鄉

Moderated by Evan Fowler, Co-founder, HKFP-CN

Home is where the heart is. Everyone has a place of belonging, where strong attachments and precious memories are developed, yet this place may not necessarily be one’s hometown. It is not uncommon to see designers stepping out of their comfort zones, be it out of necessity to challenge themselves or just to experience a different world. What are the push/pull factors for designer expatriates to leave home and base in an alien city? From local to global, our design expats will reveal the inspirations and changes in ways of thinking when they are abroad.

14:00          Home Sweet Home

             Nille Juul-Sørensen, Director, Arup-UK
             Nille Juul-Sørensen,Arup

Nille will touch upon leaving “sweet home” behind to set sails for new challenges and inspiration, where and what inspires him and how he reflects these in his work for Arup.

He will also explore whether people can survive in a new culture and how they start mixing your home culture with the new one they are trying to adapt to? How to they change and fuel their ideas and perception of design and the future?

14:30          Global Perspective, Contextual Approach

 Inge Goudsmit, Associate, OMA-CN
 Inge Goudsmit, OMA

Architecture is never an isolated artifact but part of a larger urban context. We have inherent interests in the relationship between architecture and urbanism, with contextual research at the core of our design philosophy. Working all over the globe with six regional offices, we encounter a new environment with each design exercise which requires a unique response. We define a different agenda for each location, rather than creating a recognizable brand image. This is how we work at the cutting edge of design. Through a series of OMA case studies, this lecture will illustrate how we draw inspiration from and design buildings directly in their contextual background.

15:45          Agency Crisis: Keeping the New Talent Inspired

            Mara Binudin, Creative Director, AKQA-US
            Mara Binudin,AKQA

Creativity is everywhere, not just in ad agencies. New generations are now faced with many career options to consider, all the while being under a constant pressure of living up to their peers' successes (25-year old founders, billionaires, Forbes list trailblazers...). At the same time, ad agencies struggle with their own demons, and the seniors often dismiss the generational shifts that are happening in their offices. They accuse new generations of being entitled, impatient, reactive, needy, disloyal... This creates unnecessary resentment as ones feel misunderstood and others clueless. Facing competition with new companies that also champion creativity and great perks, agencies need to work harder at retaining talent. Find out how small behavioral shifts can make a big difference.

16:15          Rising Design Women

Moderated by Evan Fowler, Co-founder, Hong Kong Free Press-CN

Design has been a very male-centric industry since the Industrial Revolution. Is it still dominated by men, despite the rapid increase in female leaders attaining senior management status in recent decades? Nonetheless, the target market and end users of design are usually very female-oriented. The discussion will focus on the interesting questions of how the gender dynamics can be balanced and in what ways female leaders influence the process of design and its result.

Debbie Millman, Chief Marketing Officer, Sterling Brands-US
            Debbie Millman,

On Rejection is a funny and heartbreaking tale of making it (or not) in New York City. The presentation begins in early 2003 when a good friend sent Debbie Millman an email containing a link that took her to a “blog,” the first-ever online forum about graphic design and branding. Suddenly she found herself reading an article that disparaged her entire career to date. This experience—in tandem with a number of historical rejections and setbacks—sent Millman into deep despair, and she seriously considered leaving the design profession altogether. In a series of poignant, revealing and sometimes hysterical anecdotes, Debbie will share her journey out of the despair and offer insight on how the worst moments in your life can actually become the most profound and life affirming.
